» Kate on the film
"I wouldn't have been able to play this part if I wasn't a mother. Your whole body language is completely dictated by the fact that you have children."
On hers and Patrick Wilson's racy sex scene: "It's really weird but at a point you forget you're naked with a relative stranger!"
"It's fun to play somebody who's not supposed to look great. I was like, 'Let's put her in the worst shirt and overalls you've ever seen'. I was in heaven!"
"It's just about people and everyone's very, very real. It's just a very honest, pure film in that sense. Almost unnervingly so at some points. You just think, 'Oh my God, is this a documentary?' And I like that about it. It feels quite European to me too and I have quite a soft spot obviously for smaller films anyway. That was just an extraordinary experience."
"The difficult thing in playing that part for me—aside from the accent and all the nudity—was that I realised halfway through shooting that I didn't really respect this woman that I was playing. If I met her in the playground I'd just think, 'Oh Jesus, what a flake. Just pull yourself together and brush your hair. And be more hands-on with your child."
"I felt so sorry for Sarah. And yes, there were some thing about her that I related to. Not necessarily things about me right now, but things in my past, when I was flailing around, searching for happiness. Part of the female make-up is, you want to find a man and you want to settle down. That's what ended up crushing Sarah. Could that have been me? Well, yeah. Definitely. When you're unhappy you make some terrible decisions and then you get that smack in the mouth, a huge moment of realisation like, 'What was I thinking?' I've had those."
